Bout of Books Read-A-Thon

Just when you think I’m not going to read anymore after finishing the Dewey 24-Hour Read-a-Thon …

I’ve decided to sign up for the Bout of Books Read-A-Thon! You can click on the link to find the sign-up post and join in on the fun!

You can view the schedule for the week here.

Since I normally do a lot of reading during the week, I thought it would be more encouragement to work on my TBR pile ‘o books. I’ve picked a list of books, but my mood changes, so hopefully the variety will keep my interest piqued.

How much I’m going to read:

I plan to read the whole week. I’m usually nose-deep in a book all week anyway, so it shouldn’t be too hard. I have a few commitments, but plan to read the rest of the time!

How many books I plan to read:

I plan to read at least a book a day … 14 books total would be great, but I’ll settle for what I get!

Here are my tentative reads:

I’m going to be updating this page each day for what I’m reading. Check back each morning for updates! I’ll also be updating on Twitter using the #boutofbooks hashtag.

DAY ONE (10/24):
# of books read – 2 full books (+1 that was previously started)
# of pages read – 84+61+241+107+10
total # of pages read – 503
books (names)Ring (finished – had 84 pages left when readathon started); The Lottery (And Other Stories), by Shirley Jackson (started); Seriously … I’m Kidding, by Ellen DeGeneres (finished); Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck (finished); The Book of Lost Things, by John Connolly (started)
thoughts – Even though I didn’t start Ring for this challenge, I have to say it was a terrible book. I’ll post a review later this week. The Lottery was a great breakup between books – I figure I’ll try and read 1/5 of the book each day this week. Seriously … I’m Kidding and Of Mice and Men – both good reads!  We had a bit of a family emergency and wound up in the hospital this afternoon, so I managed to read Of Mice and Men while waiting … it was short and easy to read!

DAY TWO (10/25):
# of books read – No books completed today 😦
# of pages read – 249+86
total # of pages read – 838 (since yesterday)
books (names)The Book of Lost Things, by John Connolly (continued); The Lottery (And Other Short Stories), by Shirley Jackson (continued)
thoughts – Today was a tougher day for reading. Back at the hospital early this morning made me exhausted for reading this afternoon and I drifted in and out and read about 30 pages. Perked up in the evening though and managed to make some headway before bed. Really enjoying The Book of Lost Things!

DAY THREE (10/26):
# of books read
– 1 finished today (+2 from Monday)
# of pages read – 80-210+107
total # of pages read – 1,235
books (names)The Lottery (And Other Stories), by Shirley Jackson (continued); The Book of Lost Things, by John Connolly (completed); Before I Go To Sleep, by S. J. Watson (started)
thoughts – I’m not sure what’s going on this week. Besides the hospital trips, I’ve been so unbelievably tired when I do manage to sit down and read that I drift in and out while reading a page … it gets better at night. Maybe I should stop getting up so early in the morning after staying up so late! Expecting to finish 2-3 books tomorrow!

DAY FOUR (10/27):
# of books read
– 1 completed! (4 total)
# of pages read – 250+22
total # of pages read – 1,507
books (names)Before I Go To Sleep, by S.J. Watson (completed); The Lottery (And Other Stories), by Shirley Jackson
thoughts – Things have come up, so my reading is going be small for the next few days, but life does happen.

DAY FIVE (10/28):
# of books read
– 1 completed! (5 total)
# of pages read – 53
total # of pages read – 1,560
books (names) – The Lottery (And Other Stories), by Shirley Jackson (completed)
thoughts – Glad I finally finished this one – it was good, though there were only a few stories that really stuck with me.

DAY SIX (10/29):
# of books read
– 0 (5 total)
# of pages read – 0
total # of pages read – 1,560
books (names) – none
thoughts – We’ve had some family things going on this week and family has come into town, so there is no time for reading! I wish I could read more, but I don’t know if recording the 10 pages I’m reading a night is worth it. I think I may be done with this challenge, though I might try and finish just one book to reach my goal of 6 books!

DAY SEVEN (10/30):
# of books read
– 1 completed (6 total!)
# of pages read – 39+166+24
total # of pages read – 1,789
books (names)Cloud Atlas, by David Mitchell (started); Heaven Is For Real, by Todd Burpo (completed); The Old Man And The Sea, by Ernest Hemingway (started)
thoughtsCloud Atlas was a horrible book to start on this last day. I don’t know if it’s just me, but the first section took such a long time to read and I fell asleep about 3 times. 3 hours later, I had read 39 pages. While I’m not going to finish this one for Bout of Books, I sure am hoping it picks up! I received Heaven is For Real for review and decided to pick it up, thinking it would keep me awake and it did – it’s definitely a great story!

Well, right when you think you can sit back and do what you want to do for 7 straight days, life hits you in the face and says, “No, you can’t!” We had some family stuff going on and I spent a few days in the hospital where I read the odd page, but not nearly what I planned for this week. I planned to read at least 7 books–1 for each day–but only finished with 6 which, under the circumstances, is pretty good! Hopefully next year I can read a little bit more. 🙂

Feels good to be cleaning off that TBR shelf (er … bookcase)!

Are you participating in this read-a-thon? What are you planning to read?

  1. Oooh! That sounds like fun. Wish I didn’t have so much to do this week. What a fantastic list of books. Some of my favourites on there. I LOVE John Connolly. He is such a lovely man too. Also love Neil Gaiman, David Mitchell, Roald Dahl and Steinbeck. Hope you enjoy.
