Before Perry and Aria, there was Roar and Liv.
After a childhood spent wandering the borderlands, Roar finally feels like he has a home with the Tides. His best friend Perry is like a brother to him, and Perry’s sister, Liv, is the love of his life. But Perry and Liv’s unpredictable older brother, Vale, is the Blood Lord of the Tides, and he has never looked kindly on Roar and Liv’s union. Normally, Roar couldn’t care less about Vale’s opinion. But with food running low and conditions worsening every day, Vale’s leadership is more vital—and more brutal—than ever. Desperate to protect his tribe, Vale makes a decision that will shatter the life Roar knew and change the fate of the Tides forever.
When I first picked up a copy of this book, I assumed it was just going to be a lovey dovey story about Roar and the woman he loves, Liv. Instead, we get a story full of love, friendship, and complete and total heartbreak that explains Roar’s character.
I really love Roar’s character. He is one of the best things about the trilogy (well, besides the whole Perry and Aria bits) and I fell in love with him the instant I met him. To see him to through a story like this with Liv was completely heartbreaking — when you meet Roar’s character, you just don’t want things like that to happen to him. If you’ve read the first book (which you really should before reading this one), you will understand.
It was also nice to get some Perry in this story and a little more light shed on Vale, Perry’s brother. We also get to meet Brooke a little bit, though she’s not totally in the forefront. Of course, neither is Liv, really. We still only get glimpses of her character — instead the story focuses completely on Roar.
I wouldn’t say that this novella blew me away or anything — especially since I completely adored the first two books in the series — but it was such a great story and left me feeling so much for Roar. Now I want to go back and reread the first two books just to get more of him!
