I had been away from writing blog posts for a while towards the end of April and the beginning of May, so when I came back to a TON of comments to approve (thank you to everyone who comments! you all make my day!) I came across this tag from Mischenko over at ReadRantRock&Roll nominating me for the Sunshine Blogger Award! I don’t ever do awards or posts like this on the blog, but it’s been so long since anyone nominated me for anything, and the questions looked like so much fun, that I just had to participate.

What’s a favourite book this year?
I’ve had a few favourites so far this year – My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier, And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, and Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day by Winifred Watson. I’m quite impressed that they’re all classics – I have been reading other books, I promise. I also read a few non-fiction books that have become favourites, from The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking and Feeding My Mother: Comfort and Laughter In The Kitchen As My Mom Lives With Memory Loss by Canadian singer-songwriter and author Jann Arden.
Who’s your favourite character in a fantasy book that you’ve read?
I haven’t read a ton of fantasy, but one character that sticks out in my mind is Kip from Brent Weeks’s Lightbringer series (of which I’ve only read the first book, The Black Prism – I plan to continue on soon!). I’ve read a few YA fantasy books and I did really love Rhysand from the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas.
What’s something that will always be in fashion, no matter how much time passes?
Oh gosh, if we’re talking fashion fashion then I haven’t a clue since I’m the least fashionable person ever, but if we’re not talking fashion then I think that being kind will always be in fashion, sending out thank you notes, minding your p’s and q’s, and whatnot.
What food is super delicious but a huge pain to eat?
Since it’s summer I have to go with corn on the cob. It’s one of my favourite things to eat in the summer and you have to eat it off the cob (seriously, people who cut the corn off the cobs are monsters!) but it gets all over your face and in your teeth.
Do you have any current worries?
I’m a mom so I always have worries! My oldest is heading into Kindergarten next year and my youngest is starting pre-school and I get worried and anxious about that, my husband works in a heavy labour job and I worry about accidents in the workplace. It’s also fire season here and we had to almost evacuate about 6 or 7 years ago and I always worry that will happen again.
What’s a book you hated this year or last?
Not gonna lie, but everyone seemed to have loved this book, but I absolutely hated American War by Omar El Akkad. I’ve seen very few bad reviews about this book so I’m definitely in the minority but I just didn’t see the hype.
What do you do to feel better when you’re feeling down?
Well, eating chocolate or cake helps! Relaxing with a good book in the quiet helps. Getting hugs and “I love you’s” from my kids helps. Or blasting my favourite band, The National, in the car.
Do you have a favourite celebrity or author?
Hmm … when it comes to celebrities I don’t really have favourites. I mean, I do love Chris Pratt! And Chris Pine! As for authors, there are so many I adore – Neil Gaiman, Sophie Kinsella, Taylor Jenkins Reid, Kelley Armstrong, Tessa Dare, Sarah Dessen, Kristin Hannah, Stephen King, Jojo Moyes, Kasie West – yeah, I have a LOT of favourites.
What’s your favourite type of weather?
COLD! Ha ha … okay, not super cold, but the fall and winter are my favourite seasons. I love when I can go outside and just need a light sweater, or when I can bundle up in multiple sweaters, scarves, hats, and whatnot. I am so NOT a summer person – if the heat goes past 18 degrees I get really cranky. Also, summer in Alberta, at least where I live, brings a lot of mosquitoes and I absolutely hate them.
What makes a great friend?
Someone who is honest and kind. I love it when I find a friend who makes getting together easy, no matter when we manage to do it, when it can be months or a year and it’s like it’s been a day when we do manage to get together. I also love it when a friend has the same likes as me – like getting together for lunch or dinner, or going to a movie, or just relaxing with a cup of tea and good chatting.
Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
Definitely an introvert. I think it’s gotten worse since I’ve had kids – I just really prefer alone time. I can’t recharge with other people or out in loud environments or I get really, really tired. I don’t really enjoy social situations and prefer to stay in rather than go out. I do go out with my family and kids but I do find it exhausting. Aside from doing things with my husband and kids, my favourite thing to do is curl up with a good book and some quiet!
