The 101 Book Challenge

Today is January 26, 2018 and as I post this it’s been about 4 months since I decided I wanted to read more classic literature. On top of that, I’ve wanted to read more books published before the 21st century. My reasoning for this is that a lot of the books published these days haven’t been wowing me at all – I mean, there are definite gems being released these days, but sometimes I feel like the same old plot is being recycled over and over again.

I wanted to start my own challenge on this blog that can coincide with some of the classic reading challenges I’ve been doing, like the Classics Club Challenge or the 1,001 Books To Read Before You Die challenge, or even my A-Z Translated Fiction Project. I find it’s easy to reach for a book that’s been published in the last decade, but books published in the 20th century deserve love, too.

What is this challenge?

I will be challenging myself to read a book from each year starting with 1899 to 2000. The same author can be duplicated with another published book, but I just want to try and challenge myself to read older books rather than just those published in the 21st century. Hopefully doing this might challenge others to do the same and I’m also hoping this will help me find more favourite authors from previous decades that I might want to read more of. I will also include rereads since I do have a few classics that I read in university I’d love to reread.

How long will this challenge run?

For the sake of convenience, I’m going to run this from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019. If I finish early then great! I would set a year, but I don’t want to put pressure on myself since I don’t want to feel like reading is a chore at all.

I’ll be listing each book here in order of year published – I’m not going by the year a certain edition is published, but by the year the author originally published the work.
